Imagine to spend your holidays in a town that still today proudly shows its Catalan origins in the culture and in the architecture of its historical centre, a town that boasts such natural beauties to have no fear of comparison with the most appreciated tourist attractions of the world, a town that in its territory has an incredible variety of coastal landscapes with crystal clear water.
Alghero, like many other small and big centres, has not a certain date of birth, and this places the town in the great number of long history towns with a particular charm for the mystery that surrounds the beginning of its history.
The variety of the landscape, already mentioned, comes from the presence of calcareous rock formation (from Monte Doglia -also written D'Olla and pronounced in Catal- to Capo Caccia), rich by nature of an incredible number of caves and gorges.
Capo Caccia preserves the most extraordinary wonders, unfortunately visible only in the Grotte di Nettuno, although have been explored many other caves (Grotta dei Pizzi e dei Ricami, Grotta Verde - 6 Km long- and the one underwater of Nereo, the last probably is the biggest in the world for its mouth wideness).
The coasts with sand and stones are particularly charming, mainly due to the small creeks of extraordinary colours and from crystal waters. Among these the 8 beaches of
"Il Lazzaretto", but also "Le Bombarde", "La Dragunara" and "Il Tramariglio".
Alghero is a fascinating town, ideal place for those who love the typical old architectures, here strongly influenced from the Catalan-Aragonese domination.
The fascination of Alghero is not only in the beauty of its coasts and sea, but also in a great ammount of archaeological remains that are of the pre-nuragic era.
Necropolis, nuraghi towers and fortifications, remains of disappeared towns, are spread in the neighbourhood.

The name of Alghero probably comes from the word Aliga or seaweed, from which derives "s'alighera" (place of the seaweed) which is the name of the town in the farmers' language of the surroundings
