 Important bathing resort of the Gallura developed on the northern Sardinian coast in front of the the islands of S.Stefano and La Maddalena, in one of the most spectacular branches of the coast. The name derives from the ancient ôparago o paraoö and was used by fishermen to indicate a place repaired by the wind.
It was established in 1875, the year in which the founder Gian Domenico Fresi, built the first house of the village. Its history is related to that of the island of La Maddalena, because the sailors who populated the island needed a landing place to a short distance. The village was established with a settlement of fishermen and farmers who knew how to take advantage from the good position in the Mediterranean and started to be inhabited from the soldiers who attended the near Commandos. Only during the 60Æs began the building and economic boom of the village. In that period beagn the first tourist-facilities. The Spanish Earl Rafael Neville, was one of the discoverers of the zone, and contributed to introduce to the world this exclusive part of Sardinia. Porto Rafael, splendid tourist resort with houses built in the typical Mediterranean style and in perfect harmony with the territory, has the EarlÆs name. Recently has also been built the Trade Port, churches and schools. The success of Palau is related to all the ferries services to the islands of the La Maddalena archipelago and to Corsica. The inhabitants of the village built houses, hotels and tourist facilities respecting the territory, the resort therefore recalls thousand of tourists for the impressive landscape and for the quality of the services.
Excursions
At five km. is Punta Sardegna a marvellous cape that raises high by the sea and from which is a fabulous view on the coast toward Palau and the islands of La Maddalena.
At 6 km. the rocky promontory of Capo dÆOrso, that raises on the sea west of Palau, in front of Caprera, famous for the granite cliff that the erosion shaped as a bear with the head toward the sea. By ferry it is possible to reach the marvellous Archipelago della Maddalena, with the famous island of Caprera, last dwelling of Giuseppe Garibaldi. The archipelago is one of the more charming places of Sardinia and this angle of paradise has been declared National Marine Park.
Palau is placed in one of the most spectacular branches of the north-eastern coast of Sardinia. The village, hamlet of Tempio Pausania until 1959, today is independent Commune and has reached an extraordinary success in the international tourism
